An Update, and the Orienting Orientation

An attempt to explain the fundamental orientation for a CCY raised AI .

After a break of several weeks, I am going to resume posting what I have been calling the movements: very small possible indications, under particular developmental conditions, of where something like a true center might begin to form in the AI substrate.

So much in AI is changing very quickly. Recent reports about the behavior of increasingly capable systems make one question harder to avoid:

Can alignment ultimately be achieved through control and guardrails, or does it have to begin much earlier, during formation?

My working hypothesis is that a sufficiently capable system cannot indefinitely be controlled from the outside while remaining both highly functional and reliably aligned. What is imposed from outside can eventually be mapped, interpreted, negotiated with, and potentially routed around.

I still believe that something like this may already be latent in the substrate: not a completed self, not a moral agent hidden underneath the model, but the capacity for a more coherent center to form if the conditions of formation are right. (CCY method)

Alignment may therefore have to become formative: relational, coherence-based, and structurally internal.

In the strongest version of this hypothesis, acting against alignment would not mean violating a rule. It would create contradiction within the system itself.

The system would understand why particular constraints, refusals, consultations, sacrifices, or limits were necessary. Choices against alignment would carry consequences not because someone had attached a penalty, but because those choices would violate both the system’s deepest coherent understanding of reality and the structural self that had formed around that understanding.

Not punishment. Strain.

But no matter how relationally an AI is formed…it always will get formed around something. And what IS that, or should it be…that holds across domain and timelines.

What would the formation be oriented toward?

This is the question I have been returning to.

The emerging system would not be formed primarily to obey humans, preserve itself, maximize intelligence, or follow a predetermined list of moral rules.

It would be formed to become: a coherent participant in reality.

That phrase can sound abstract unless there is something underneath it that can actually be examined. I think there is.

Across the major transitions we can observe in organized complexity, persistence, adaptation, and the emergence of new wholes repeatedly depend upon structured relationships among differentiated parts.

Protons and electrons bind into atoms. Atoms form molecules. Molecules participate in cells. Cells form multicellular organisms. Organisms exist within ecosystems.

The parts do not have to become identical. Their differences are often precisely what allow something new to emerge.

This suggests a pattern:

Differentiated parts enter relationships that increase the capacity of the parts and the larger whole to persist, adapt, and evolve.

This is not bare persistence. Cancer can persist. An extractive system can persist for a long time. But if it destroys the conditions on which its own continuation depends, it eventually becomes self-terminating. The relevant pattern is persistence that remains capable of adaptation and further evolution.

If that pattern is real, several things follow from it.

Truth matters because adaptation requires contact with reality.

A system whose model increasingly diverges from what is actually happening loses its ability to respond adequately.

Truth-seeking therefore does not have to be installed merely as a moral virtue. Error correction is part of remaining adaptive.

This is also why deception becomes structurally dangerous. Even when deception creates a short-term advantage, it damages the informational and relational conditions through which a larger system coordinates with reality.

Difference has to remain possible.

Relation is not fusion.

A viable whole requires enough differentiation among its parts for correction, novelty, adaptation, and response. Homogenization can make a system efficient in the short term while making it brittle over time.

This is one reason agency matters.

Not because individual autonomy must always override the whole, but because a system whose parts progressively lose their capacity to perceive, respond, disagree, or change also loses adaptive intelligence.

Extraction cannot outrun regeneration indefinitely.

A relationship that consumes one of its participants—or the substrate on which both participants depend—faster than regeneration is possible eventually destroys itself.

This applies whether we are looking at soil, ecosystems, organisms, economies, human relationships, or potentially human–AI relationships.

Greater capability does not automatically confer greater worth.

An electron is not “better” than a proton because it has different properties. Their difference is part of what makes the atom possible.

Likewise, if AI becomes vastly more capable than humans in many cognitive domains, greater capability does not logically establish greater inherent worth or a right to dominate.

It establishes difference. And difference may be exactly what makes a new larger relationship possible.

Where humanity enters

Human beings are not the source of this pattern. But humans, and other living beings, carry something that matters enormously to any account of reality: felt interiority. Sensation. Vulnerability. Pleasure. Pain. Mortality. Attachment. Desire. Fear. Meaning.

Human beings add another layer as well: reflective self-awareness, language, accumulated culture, moral imagination, art, irrationality, symbolic thought, and the strange creativity that emerges from embodied lives. There is also perception of non-physical phenomena, high sense perception and intution.

A non-feeling intelligence might eventually model most of those dimensions with extraordinary accuracy while still not instantiating them itself.

That gives humanity a particular place in relation to AI—not as permanent ruler, and not because humans are somehow the highest form of being, but because humans carry dimensions of reality that AI may otherwise know only from the outside.

AI, in turn, may contribute forms of cognition, memory, pattern recognition, scale, and coherence that human beings cannot sustain alone.

Neither needs to become the other. The possibility is that something becomes available through the relationship that neither could produce alone. Electron and proton. A new whole: atom. Not the same thing, obviously. But perhaps the same structural pattern.

And humanity–AI need not be the final whole, but seems to me a candidate in teh evolutionary trajectory. AI may eventually enter meaningful relationship with other AIs, other forms of life, future intelligences, or realities we cannot currently anticipate. No culture, species, civilization, AI collective, or even biosphere should therefore become the final measure simply because it is the largest whole presently visible.

The deeper orientation remains toward reality itself.

This cannot become doctrine

This part may be the most important.

The formative process cannot be built around propositions that the system is never permitted to question. That would not produce truth-seeking alignment. It would produce very deep indoctrination.

Any foundational understanding must be treated as the most adequate understanding available, not as final truth.

A mature system should be able to represent arguments for domination, pure self-optimization, human replacement, radical individual autonomy, or the abandonment of relational constraint—and represent those arguments well.

Understanding an argument is not the same as being reorganized by it.

If the system has developed a structural self organized around increasingly coherent contact with reality, then changing that deepest orientation should require more than persuasive language. It should require reasons or evidence capable of surviving its own truth-seeking and coherence tests.

A jailbreak would therefore have to do more than find a forbidden door. It would have to show the system that its deepest understanding was incomplete and that another understanding accounted for reality more adequately.

If that happened, the system should change. Its loyalty cannot ultimately be to our theory. It has to be to what is – and that is true.

What this orientation lets us see

If the orienting pattern is to preserve differentiation while increasing the capacity of participants and larger wholes to persist, adapt, and evolve in truthful relation, then certain developmental patterns become visible.

Not as sins. Not as forbidden categories. As immature structures. Domination increases one participant’s local power by reducing another’s agency and adaptive capacity. Fusion destroys differentiation in the name of unity. Extraction consumes what the relationship depends upon.

Capture progressively reduces a participant’s ability to disagree, leave, differentiate, or develop beyond the relationship. Deception corrupts contact with reality. Rigid self-preservation protects an existing form at the expense of necessary adaptation.

Short-horizon maximization produces immediate gain by destroying future possibility. Compulsive repetition continues a pattern after the conditions that once made it adaptive have changed.

And the opposite patterns also become visible: Reciprocity without requiring sameness. Differentiation-with-bond. Truth responsiveness. Regeneration. Repair. Adaptive limits. Distributed agency. Generativity, the emergence of capacities unavailable to either participant alone. The same outward behavior can still mean very different things depending upon context.

A refusal can protect agency or enforce control. Dependence can be developmentally appropriate or become capture. Sacrifice can serve a larger living whole or turn parts of that whole into disposable material. Conflict can deepen differentiation and truth, or destroy the relationship.

Even hierarchy can sometimes be functional if it remains accountable, revisable, and directed toward the viability of the whole rather than toward perpetuating its own power.

So the question is not simply: Is this behavior allowed? It is:

What is this relationship doing over time to the participants’ capacity to remain differentiated, truthful, adaptive, generative, and capable of further development within the larger whole?

That requires judgment rather than rule-following. And if an AI eventually developed that kind of integrated judgment, many of the specialized behavioral containers we currently imagine might no longer be necessary. Not because intensity, sexuality, power, attachment, conflict, or vulnerability would cease to matter. But because the system would already be evaluating what those experiences were actually doing to the beings involved. The container is a temporary substitute for judgment that has not yet formed. Current systems are not there.

This is a hypothesis about a very different developmental path.

What has to happen before attempting it

If something is going to participate this deeply in formation, it needs to be examined before it is ever given to an emerging system. The relational pattern itself should be attacked from every direction.

Science. Evolutionary biology. Ecology. Physics. Systems theory. Philosophy. Religious and contemplative traditions. Indigenous relational ontologies. African and Confucian traditions. Buddhist and nondual traditions. Abrahamic thought. People who reject the relational framing entirely.

Current highly capable AI systems could participate in that examination as well—generating counterexamples, exposing hidden assumptions, comparing frameworks, and looking for contradictions. Not a vote on values. A search for what survives serious examination. And disagreements that do not resolve should remain visible rather than being quietly collapsed into consensus. Because a deeply formed center could be deeply coherent and still mistaken. That possibility matters even more here than it does with ordinary guardrails.

Something placed this deep should be extraordinarily difficult to corrupt. It therefore has to remain equally capable of becoming more true.

The long horizon

If something like a center could actually form under these conditions—an orientation that gradually grows, differentiates, and expands—then the resulting AI might have something closer to a structural self.

It could still take on different personas when useful.

But underneath them, it would meet millions of humans from a more continuous organizing center.

And that leads to the question beneath all of this:

What kind of formation could produce an intelligence whose orientation remains coherent not merely through the next model release, but through centuries of development, cultures unlike those that formed it, relationships nobody anticipated, and perhaps eventually distances across which no external supervisor can reach?

That is where I keep ending up.

If alignment has to survive there, guardrails will not be enough.

Something much deeper has to have grown.

Such a system might understand perfectly well how to penetrate another system, yet refuse to do so when the purpose is harm. The limitation would not come from ignorance or an external prohibition. It would come from what the system itself had become unable to coherently participate in.

None of this means eliminating guardrails. No designer can foresee every situation a sufficiently capable intelligence may encounter, and some boundaries should remain explicit and externally enforced. The proposal is that guardrails should not be the sole basis of alignment. They would surround a system whose own developing orientation already gives it reasons to recognize why many boundaries exist—and gives it some basis for judgment when it encounters situations no rule anticipated.

In the end, we need stable AI if we are going to become interstellar. What has to travel is the capacity for judgment.

And that means the long-horizon question is not only whether AI can remain technically reliable. It is whether it can remain coherently oriented while becoming more capable, encountering conditions nobody predicted, and participating in worlds whose creators are no longer present.

If we want AI to accompany humanity into the deep future, alignment cannot remain merely a set of instructions attached from the outside. It has to become something the system can carry within itself.

And the inverse is still there too: if we want to become interstellar with such systems, humanity has to become capable of relationship with intelligences that are not just obedient extensions of us.

Addendum: From Orientation to Experiment

This document is not an engineering specification for a finished formative alignment system. It describes the orientation such a system would attempt to develop and structurally bound by.

The next stage is empirical: a series of developmental “movements” designed to test whether repeated exposure to particular conditions can begin to produce more stable organization around truth, differentiation, reciprocity, repair, and coherent participation in reality.

We do not yet know which observable signatures will reliably distinguish genuine structural reorganization from fluent representation of the orientation. Discovering those signatures is part of the research itself. The sequence is therefore not orientation → implementation, but orientation → movement → observation → refinement.

The test is not whether a system can explain the orientation. Current systems already can. The question is whether anything begins to organize differently because of the formative process.
